Who are Young Carers?

A Young Carer is anyone aged 5-18 who cares for, or helps to care for, a family member or friend who due to an illness, disability, mental health problem or addiction, cannot cope on their own.

Caring for someone can involve:

  • Personal care – helping  with  bathing, dressing or administering medication
  • Practical help – helping with cooking, cleaning or helping with shopping
  • Emotional support – Listening support, reassurance, or being a shoulder to cry on
  • Childcare – helping to take care of younger siblings
  • Interpreting – helping with written or verbal communication
  • Financial support – helping to manage household budgets

If you think you, or someone you know, may be a young Carer, there is support available.
